Kids bedrooms should be a space where they can express who they are. Let them
have input when deciding on a theme so that they can express their individuality
and creativity. It is a place for sleeping, playing, and working – be that
studying or drawing. Adequate storage is essential and means that toys and
belongings can be kept tidy but most importantly accessible.
A good bed is
the most important piece of furniture. Bear in mind that this will need to last
for years to come so keep the style simple. You can choose between a king single
bed and a standard single bed. The king single is wider and slightly longer.
Bunk beds are ideal if space is limited and children find them lots of fun. Be
sure the top bed has a safety rail for younger children.
Choose a good mattress that is comfortable and supportive and if necessary allergy
treated.
The transition from cot to bed is an important one and usually
occurs when the child outgrows the cot or starts to climb out. Initially
toddlers seem very small in a big bed. Some cots convert to a small bed, which
can ease the transition, but often the cot is required for the arrival of
another baby. You can cosy up a big bed with the addition of cushions. A
sleeping bag will also cocoon the child and make them feel more secure. Pushing
the bed up against the wall minimises the risk of falling out, as does the
addition of a side rail to the bed. A trundle bed (underbed) pulled out halfway
or a mattress on the floor will cushion any falls.
Your choice of bed linen
will normally dictate the theme of the room. Duvet covers, fitted sheets, flat
sheets and pillowslips complete the basics. The addition of cushions, throws,
blankets and novelties can make the bed more interesting and inviting. Children
need to feel cosy and safe and it helps when things that they love surround
them.
Choose good quality bed linen that is soft and comfortable and easy to
launder. Co-ordinating fabrics and designs mean you can mix and match without
the room looking hectic. The choice is endless – have some fun with
it!
Children need spaces for displaying their drawings, paintings and
schoolwork. It is part of expressing who they are. Have dedicated areas for
these. A notce board is particularly useful, the bigger the better. These are
available in a variety of sizes, or you can custom make your own by covering a
piece of fibreboard in a fabric of your choice. This can add interest and colour
to the room on its own but looks even better covered in drawings and
certificates. Having a dedicated space means that you can preserve the other
walls and prevent the room from becoming too busy.
Storage for all other
belongings is essential if you want to keep clutter to a minimum. Under bed
storage on wheels means unsightly toys and games can be rolled away when not in
use but more importantly rolled out for immediate action! If shallow enough toys
are easily found. Fabric toy barrels and wooden toy boxes are also useful as are
baskets, boxes or storage crates stacked on open shelving.
A bedside table
provides a place for a reading lamp, books and drinks.
Other accessories such
as curtains, rugs and wallpaper borders can build on the theme and give the room
a co-ordinated look. Fun curtain tiebacks, bookends, novelty doorknobs and photo
frames will add colour and interest.
